Social Science Students in Finland
Social Science Students in Finland SYY ry is an interest organisation for everyone studying political, social, or administrative sciences. Our parent organisation is Social Science Professionals, which is part of Akava. SYY’s membership consists of members of Social Science Professionals who are working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree. SYY has approximately 2,500 members.
SYY promotes the interests of social science students both locally and nationally, and organises interesting events focusing on working life. In its lobbying activities SYY focuses on both social science students and recent social science graduates. All of SYY’s activities have a focus on working life, and in the labour market field SYY collaborates with Social Science Professionals and Akava students.
SYY’S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
SYY’s Executive Committee is in charge of the decision making in the organisation, and it is made up of student representatives from different social science faculties. The Executive Committee’s term is one calendar year. SYY’s highest decision-making organ is the General Assembly, and the Executive Committee is the organisation’s executive organ.
SYY’s eight local organisations (Helsinki, Turku, Kuopio, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Joensuu, Vaasa and Lapland) are in charge of the local activities.

How do I join?
Everyone studying political, social, or administrative sciences can join Social Science Professionals. It is easy to join, and for students it is also very affordable – only 28 euros per year. Become a member

Who can become a member?
Anyone who has an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a university or is studying for such a degree can join. The organisation’s rules
What happens once I’ve sent my application?
The Board will process the membership applications at their monthly meeting and accept new members. If a membership application is sent by post, the membership starts on the date on the application. If you use the electronic application, your membership starts on the day the application was received. If you wish, you can choose a later start date.
If you are a salaried employee, your membership of the Unemployment Fund for Higher Educated Employees will begin on the same date as your Union membership. After the Board meeting you will receive a confirmation letter for your membership.
